OFFICIAL NAME:
Begonia Maculata
One of our personal favourites!
Add a splash of fun into your home with a Begonia Maculata. The almost cheeky foliage will make a fun statement. The silver spotted leaves are stunning and a stand out amongst the red undersides. They are always a conversation starter - don't be spotted without one! 😉
ALSO KNOW AS:
Polka Dot Begonia, Angel Wing Begonia, Wightii (this guy has white flowers), Monsieur Begonia Maculata and Trout Begonia
CLIMATE AND ORIGIN:
Eastern Brazil - Subtropical
WATERING AND CARE:
The great thing about these beauties is that they are quite easy to care for. Keep soil moist but not wet. Ensure the few top centimetres of soil at are dry before watering, overwatering will cause root rot. You can revive an underwatered Begonia Maculata, but overwatering can be detrimental.
Some people like to mist them, but limit this unless humidity is low as it can lead to powdery mildew and other fungal diseases.
Yes! They do flower. You may notice that in the warmer months, these beauties may throw a gorgeous white or pale pink cluster of flowers.
Begonia Maculatas prefer bright indirect light but not direct sun. Good lighting helps keep these funky little guys stay vibrant and flowering.
They may need to be staked or supported as the can become heavy and stems can snap with excessive growth.
TOXICITY FOR PETS:
All Begonias are toxic to pets. The leaves are mildly toxic whereas the roots are especially toxic. (we don't suggest eating any of your houseplants. 🥴)
